Watford have confirmed the signing of Ismael Kone from MLS side Montreal. The player becomes the record sale for the Canadian team, and has chosen to join the Championship club despite interest from Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.
This past summer, clubs like Norwich City and Sheffield United also tried to sign him. But they were unsuccessful in their attempts. And now, he has made the choice to join the Hornets in the second division of England.
Ismael Kone joins Watford from Montreal
“I want to thank the club (Montreal) for everything it has done for me,” said Ismael Koné. “I grew as a player, but also off the field. I had a lot to learn, but the people here helped me develop. I’m grateful because I had the opportunity to begin my career at home.”
The 20-year-old plays as a central midfielder, and represented Canada at the 2022 World Cup. He has signed a four and a half year deal with the Hornets, committing his foreseeable future to the club.
During the 2022 season, Montreal achieved a record 20 wins, and were able to finish third in the Eastern Conference. On the back of a very successful season, the youngster has decided to take the next big step in his career.
Ismael Kone joins Matheus Martins as one of the two players to have joined during the January transfer window so far. Both players are now part of the Udinese/Watford setup, as they have the same owners. The pair will be registered during the January transfer window when it is allowed.
