Argentina and Poland have qualified for the 2022 World Cup knockout stages from Group C. Mexico finished level on four points with Poland, but were eliminated on goal difference.
Following the game, the Mexican national team manager, Gerardo Martino, has announced his resignation from his position. And despite winning the game against Saudi Arabia, they were unable to make it out of their group.
Argentina and Poland through to World Cup Round of 16
Poland were able to finish second despite losing their game against Argentina. Mexico needed to have a greater goal difference than Poland to advance, but could only win 2-1.
Lionel Messi was awarded a rather controversial penalty in the first half, which he failed to convert. Wojciech Szczesny dived the right way and got a strong hand to his shot to save a second penalty in the 2022 World Cup.
However, a debut goal from Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister and a strong finish from Julian Alvarez made it 2-0 for the Albiceleste. The Copa America winners finished at the top of their group despite losing their opening game, and will face Australia in their Round of 16 fixture.
And after qualifying by the skin of their teeth, Poland have a huge fixture against reigning champions France.
