Portugal have secured qualification into the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, after defeating Uruguay 2-0. The 2016 Euro winners have joined France and Brazil, who already qualified for the knockout stages.
Bruno Fernandes scored both goals for Portugal as they won last night. The Manchester United midfielder scored his first with a cross that went over Ronaldo’s head, and into the far corner. He then converted a penalty in additional time to win the game.
Portugal advance to 2022 World Cup knockout stages
Rodrigo Bentancur almost earned the lead for Uruguay before Portugal had scored. However, Diogo Costa saved his effort quite well. Maxi Gomez also came mighty close to scoring, but while his curling effort beat the keeper, it bounced off the post.
With his brace, Bruno Fernandes now has the joint-most goal contributions in the World Cup so far (4). He was rightfully named the man of the match, and has been the star for the team so far.
Uruguay need Portugal to defeat South Korea, and need to beat Ghana themselves to have a chance at qualifying for the Round of 16 by finishing second. Fernandes’ side, on the other hand, are guaranteed to finish at the top of the pile with two wins.
