Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho has informed the Portugal U-21 team that he no longer wishes to represent them by text. All signs point to the player switching his allegiance to England, having represented them at the youth level.
After making his transfer to Merseyside, the 20-year-old has made 11 appearances across all competitions. He was not selected for the Portugal World Cup squad, and has quit the team ahead of the preparation games.
Fabio Carvalho quits Portugal U-21 by text
“Fabio Carvalho informed the Portuguese Football Federation, through some SMS messages, that he does not intend to continue representing Portugal at U21 level. This decision by the player was communicated after the call-up for the preparation games with the Czech Republic and Japan was known,” an official statement read.
The youngster was born in Portugal but moved to England at the age of 10, and has represented them at the U16, U17 and U18 level. And by the looks of things, he might be changing his allegiance to them very soon.
The Portugal board had no idea about this decision beforehand, since he was listed in their 55-man shortlist for the World Cup. The playmaker is also eligible to play for Angola if he so wishes.
