Manchester City have ended their run before the World Cup with a shocking defeat against Brentford at home. A 98th minute counter attacking goal helped the visitors pick up all three points against the defending champions.
Thomas Frank’s men were able to keep Erling Haaland quiet during the entire game as well. The Norwegian was barely given space, and was successfully neutralised throughout the 100 minutes of football.
Manchester City defeated by Brentford
Ivan Toney opened the scoring for the Bees in the 16th minute, heading the ball into the back of the net after rising above Aymeric Laporte. However, both teams would head into half time on level terms after an equalising goal from Phil Foden.
The City academy graduate took his tally to seven goals this season, after blasting the ball past David Raya from a corner situation. With ten minutes of injury time added on, Manchester City went all-out on the attack to find the winning goal.
But, a perfect counter attack from Brentford helped them earn the winning goal with no time to spare. Ivan Toney scored a brace only a day after it was revealed that he won’t be going to the World Cup with England, now having scored ten goals this season.
With the surprise loss, Manchester City could end up five points behind Arsenal if they win their game this weekend.
