A well-known Apple expert predicted that iPhone production in India will increase dramatically by 150% year over year in 2023 as a result of the regular lockdowns at factories in China.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a Hong Kong-based analyst, Foxconn, the company that makes iPhones, is apparently intending to expedite the growth of its facilities in India.

Shifting Production to India

Following his tweet, Foxconn would increase production there with the medium- to long-term objective of supplying 40 to 45 percent of iPhones from that country. Since Foxconn now only distributes 2-4% of the world’s iPhones, the company is expected to grow quickly over the next few years.

According to the sources, the Taiwanese company has already started construction on new production facilities near its existing facility in Tamil Nadu. Hiring is already underway.

Just 10 days after the official release, Foxconn began producing the newest iPhone 14 (basic) models in India, highlighting the significance of the country in the US major’s intentions to withdraw from China in the coming years.

India’s contribution is anticipated to increase by 5-7% by the end of this year, according to Kuo. As a result of the shutdown at the Zhengzhou, China facility, which has reportedly caused a 30% drop in global shipments, Kuo predicts that Apple will swiftly move its main manufacturing base to India.

Foxconn and iPhone

5% of the world’s iPhone 14 manufacturing will be produced in India by the end of 2022, according to JP Morgan research, and 25% of Apple’s iPhone manufacture will be moved there by 2025.

The Tata Group has also been enlisted by Apple to provide the components for the various iPhone generations. Tata is currently hiring 45,000 people for their facility in the Tamil Nadu industrial town of Hosur. Tata and Taiwanese manufacturer Wistron are also negotiating to form a joint venture to produce iPhones in India.

Pegatron, who started making the most recent iPhone 14 in India after Foxconn, would be used to meet both domestic and international demand. Under the PLI smartphone program, Pegatron intends to invest Rs 1,132 crore between FY2022-23 and FY2024-25.
