AMD: RDNA3 “Navi 31” Latest Rumors

According to recent sources, AIBs already have test units of the AMD RDNA 3 “Radeon RX 7000” GPUs, which promise significant improvements over RDNA 2. According to the most recent speculations, AIBs are already testing AMD Radeon RX 7000 GPUs using the RDNA 3 architecture in their labs, according to Greymon55.

Although the leaker omitted partners’ quotes, they did provide us with some early performance predictions that seem excellent. Since the Navi 31 flagship GPU from AMD is expected to debut on November 3rd, it is likely that these flagship processors are being tested at this time to compete with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090 & RTX 4080 graphics cards.

The AMD RDNA 3 GPUs found on the Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards, according to the leaker, can enhance performance by up to 2x for pure rasterization tasks and by over 2x for ray tracing tasks. Although the RX 6900 XT and RX 6950 XT are not specifically stated in the RDNA 2 GPU, the RDNA 2 chip delivered improved performance in raster compared to the RTX 3090 and came very close to the RTX 3090 Ti while the RX 6950 XT outperformed it. If AMD made a 2x improvement in this area, it would be able to match and sometimes even outperform the RTX 4090’s performance among many players.

Depending on the title, AMD may wind up being on par with or significantly faster than the RTX 30 series “Ampere” graphics cards in ray tracing.

Ada Lovelace RTX 40 series GPUs do provide significantly quicker ray tracing performance than the RTX 30 range, with improvements of over two times. Ray tracing will therefore significantly advance, but it might not be able to catch up to the RTX 40 series.

Furthermore, there is no information available regarding new AI-assisted features included on RDNA 3 GPUs to support upscaling technologies like FSR. In AAA games that support it, NVIDIA’s new 4th Gen Tensor core architecture enables “Frame Generation” for performance increases of 2-4x. Where it works, the technology works quite well, but there are still a few problems that need be resolved as the technology develops.

Finally, the leaker claims that the reference TBP looks fantastic, however it’s unclear whether this is in comparison to the RTX 40 series or the RDNA 2 range. With the RDNA 3 “Radeon RX 7000” GPU family, AMD has previously said that its power numbers will be significantly lower than those of the competition.

AMD revealed that their RDNA 3 GPUs, which feature a significant performance boost, will be released later this year. David Wang, Senior Vice President of Engineering, Radeon Technologies Group, stated that the new GPUs for the Radeon RX 7000 series will provide over a 50% increase in performance per watt over the RDNA 2 GPUs now in use.

Sam Naffziger, AMD’s SVP & Technology Architect, has emphasised that the next-generation RDNA 3 GPUs, which are found in the Radeon RX 7000 GPUs and next-generation iGPUs, will offer a number of new technologies, including a refined adaptive power management tech to set workload-specific operation points, ensuring that the GPU only uses the power required for the workload. The next-generation AMD Infinity Cache, which will provide higher-density, lower-power caches and reduced power consumption for the graphics memory, will also be a feature of the GPUs.

According to sources, the flagship Navi 31 GPU will be on sale first, followed by the Navi 32 and Navi 33 GPUs in the AMD Radeon RX 7000 “RDNA 3” GPU portfolio based on the Nav 3x GPUs. Additionally, a recent report stated that the graphics cards would be available for purchase in December.
