Lionel Messi’s signing for PSG taken to court over potential FFP breach

Lionel Messi’s move to PSG last year remains one of the most high-profile transfers in recent memory. The Argentine left Barcelona, the only club he had ever played for professionally, upon the expiry of his contract.

The main reason behind his departure was Barcelona being unable to renegotiate his deal due to Financial Fair Play restrictions. And Messi’s current salary at PSG of €40 million per season has resulted in an official complaint with the European Court.

PSG facing legal trouble over Lionel Messi transfer

In 2021, a group of Barça socios sent legal complaint about Leo Messi's move to PSG. The Court of the European Union has finally accepted the complaint. There will be a public court hearing on October 18.

The complaint was raised by a Barcelona fan group in Lyon who have claimed that the French giants did not sign Lionel Messi, abiding by the FFP rules.

A chamber of the European Court in Luxembourg is expected to pass their decision over the transfer after analysing all the evidence.

The Barcelona support group’s lawyer, Juan Branco, has claimed that the group sees the matter being taken up in court as a success. However, there has emerged no evidence that the issue is in fact in breach of the financial fair play rules.

Messi’s current deal runs out at the end of the season, and rumours linking him with a return to Barcelona have been intensifying every week. However, the player will only decide on his future after the 2022 World Cup.
