Manchester City won a 9-goal thriller against their local rivals, Manchester United in the derby. Both Phil Foden and Erling Haaland scored hat-tricks, while Anthony Martial scored a brace after coming off of the bench. Antony also scored for the Red Devils, but it ended up being only half of what their rivals put on the board.
With their win, the reigning champions have moved to a gap of one point behind Arsenal. The Londoners are currently at the top of the table, and are mounting a strong early challenge for the league title.
Foden and Haaland score hat-tricks to fire Manchester City to win
In his first ever appearance in the Manchester derby, Erling Haaland put on an absolute masterclass. The Norwegian not only scored a hat-trick, but also assisted two, in a sensational outing.
Following the game, Haaland now has three hat-tricks in only 8 Premier League games. And to no one’s surprise, he is the fastest player to achieve this feat. The forward now has 14 Premier League goals in 8 games.
Anthony Martial was able to score two late goals, the second one being a penalty, to reduce the margin of defeat. And United are now seventh in the table with 12 points so far.
The gulf in class was quite evident between the two teams, and it was a difficult first Manchester derby for Erik Ten Hag. However, there will be little time to regroup since their next game is in mid-week, in the Europa League.
