How have Barcelona spent €108m on transfers despite their financial mess?

Before the start of the summer transfer window, it seemed unlikely that Barcelona would be making a lot of signings. La Liga revealed that their wage limit was in the negative, and that they wouldn’t be able to register players without clearing off some of the existing squad.

However, they have still gone on to sign several big players over the last few weeks. Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie were the first two names to be confirmed by the club. They were followed by Raphinha from Leeds United, and now, Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

How have Barcelona signed so many players this summer?

Clement Lenglet, Francisco Trincao and Rey Manaj have already left the club. Oscar Mingueza, Riqui Puig, Neto, Samuel Umtiti and Martin Braithwaite are also expected to leave the club this summer to make way for the newer signings.

Barcelona have time until August 31 to get their wages off of their books so that they can register the new players. They have already agreed pay cuts with several existing members, such as Ousmane Dembele, who signed a renewal with a 40% cut

The ‘financial levers’ activated by Joan Laporta which have sold off assets of the club for a cash injection is how Barcelona are funding their transfers right now. However, there is a chance that this could be detrimental to their future if they are not able to get results on the pitch and gain the financial strength to pay off their debts.
