Charles Leclerc was able to win the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix and re-insert himself into the battle for the F1 Championship. He claimed the win in Red Bull’s ‘home’ turf in Spielberg, with Max Verstappen finishing second behind the Ferrari driver.
One of the most prolific talking points from the race was the fate of Carlos Sainz. Having won the previous race, the Spaniard endured a nightmare this time around. His car caught fire when he was in third place, and he had to retire as a result, and was lucky to get away unharmed.

Mercedes had a particularly positive day on the tracks. Lewis Hamilton finished third for a second consecutive race, while George Russell finished in P4, despite serving a five second penalty for an incident with Sergio Perez. He had to eventually retire from the race, in a blow to his ambitions of staying close in the title race.
The driver of the day was Mick Schumacher, who earned a sixth position finish, his career best so far. The Haas team has been able to deliver the results this season, and with Schumacher’s performance, they have hit a new high.
With his first place finish in the Austrian Grand Prix, Leclerc is in second place in the driver standings. But Versteppen is still ahead with his runner up finish today. Carlos Sainz has fallen 19 points behind Leclerc today, and will be hopeful of bouncing back in the next race.
