Bulk manufacturing of Samsung’s 5nm Exynos chips will start in August

Samsung has been working on 5nm chipset for past few months and due to the pandemic the mass production has delayed. But now reports from South Korea revealed that the company will resume the mass production of its 5nm EUV chipsets in August. According to ZDNet these chipsets will be called Exynos 992 and it is to be seen that if Samsung Electronics will use this chipset in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series smartphone lineup in August.

The so-called 5nm Exynos 992 chipset will use ARM’s Cortex-A78 CPU cores and Mali-G78 GPU architecture. In theory, this would mean 20% more efficiency of the processor, compared with the existing Cortex-A77 on the Exynos 990, while the graphics unit will offer 25% better performance than the Mali-G77. ARM confirmed the Cortex-A78 will be used in chipsets built on a 5nm process that is also being developed by the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

Reports claim that Samsung Electronics will compete against its potential Taiwanese rival with this chipset and will use it in the meantime in its upcoming Note 20 series. An official from the securities industry said, “We expect Samsung Electronics to apply the Exynos processor to the Galaxy Note 20 series in a similar way to the past (applied to domestic models Exynos and overseas models Snapdragon).” Considering this, it is unlikely to increase significantly, but it will be a product that proves the competitiveness of the foundry and system LSI business in terms of applying the 5nm process for the first time.”
