IKEA, the Swedish home furnishings giant, is at last feeling bullish about the India market as it plans to add back-to-back stores over the next couple of years. The company, which today established its fourth facility in Bengaluru, is planning to open at least three to four huge locations fast after each other, according to key executives at its India branch.
In 2018, IKEA opened its first facility in Hyderabad, and in 2020 and 2021, respectively, it opened two smaller city locations in Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. With the launch of its large-format store in Bengaluru today, IKEA now has four sites across the country.
The company asserts that it is currently India’s largest store with a floor area of 460,000 square feet. IKEA has engaged close to 1,000 individuals to handle the store, with 70% of them being locals, claims Parineeta Cecil Lakra, Country Individuals & Culture Manager at IKEA India.
“Currently, we have some 3,000 people working for IKEA and we plan to take that number up to 10,000”, she said without specifying a timeline.
Erik Jan Middelhoven, Home Furnishing and Design Manager, IKEA India, stated that after the Bengaluru shop opens, IKEA plans to open two more locations, one in Mumbai and the other in Bengaluru. Then the Delhi-NCR region would be highlighted.
“The concerned teams are already working on the NCR project and finalising the location is being worked out”, he told BT.
