Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Burnley for the transfer of Nick Pope. Eddie Howe wanted to sign the goalkeeper for a long time, and now has his man with a deal in place between the two clubs.

Burnley maintained that they would not stand in the way of him wanting to return to the Premier League, given his level. And having been relegated to the Championship, they have agreed to let the player leave and join the Magpies.

Nick Pope to join Newcastle United soon

The 30-year-old is expected to complete his medical for the transfer very soon. He had a year left on his contract with Burnley, but will now compete with Martin Dubravka for the number one spot under Eddie Howe.

Nick Pope is unlikely to be the last Burnley player to leave the club this summer, having been relegated. They are due to pay back a £65 million loan and will need to gather funds as a result. The relegation will also require them to sell players in order to stay financially stable.

The goalkeeper was named in Gareth Southgate’s Nations League squad, and has earned eight caps for the England national team. But, he has been unable to nail down a starting spot ahead of Jordan Pickford. Competing with Dubravka might give the Englishman a raise in his level, which could allow him to be the first pick in Gareth Southgate’s line-up, ahead of an important World Cup year.
