AYA Neo Air is to be launched with an OLED display and a price of $549

For a few reasons, the AYA Neo Air is a mobile gaming PC that distinguishes out in an increasingly saturated industry. It’s the first to include an OLED screen. It’s one of the tiniest and lightest x86-based versions available.

It’s also AYA’s most affordable handheld to date, with entry-level models starting at $549 at retail. Unfortunately, something had to be sacrificed for all of those things to be true, and it appears that it was battery life in this case.

While the AYA Neo Air was just made available for pre-order in China, the company didn’t unveil the device’s exact specifications until a press event on May 28, 2022, where we learnt what makes it tick. The AYA Neo Air has a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, up to 32GB of RAM, an AMD Ryzen 5 5000U processor with Radeon Vega integrated graphics and an M.2 2280 port for up to 2TB of solid-state storage.

The AYA Neo Air also comes with a 28Wh battery, which AYA admits will only provide a little more than an hour of gameplay time for more resource-intensive games like Forza Horizon 5 or The Witcher 3. For less demanding games like Dead Cells, you should get roughly 2.5 hours of battery life, but that’s still nowhere near the battery life you’d get from rival devices with larger batteries: the ONEXPLAYER 1S, for example, has twice the battery capacity of the AYA Neo Air.

There will also be an AYA Neo Air Pro variant with a 38 Wh battery

This should provide a bit more run time, but even that falls short of most competing devices, with the firm predicting only 89 minutes of Forza Horizon 5 and 3.25 hours of Dead Cells playtime.

The Pro models are also a little thicker and heavier than the devices with 28Wh batteries, but some configurations come with faster CPUs and more memory and storage than the lower-cost variants.

While the battery life is lacking, AYA emphasised the device’s features during a press event, such as the AMOLED display’s 100,000:1 contrast ratio, 109 per cent NTSC colour gamut (including 100 per cent sRGB, 96 per cent Adobe RGB, and 99 per cent DCI-P3), and support for up to 350 nits brightness.

A microSD card reader, a 3.5mm audio line, game controllers with RGB lights beneath the analogue sticks, and a “full function” USB-C connector are among the other features. There’s also an optional docking station with HDMI and Ethernet connectors, two USB-C ports, and two USB-A ports that attaches to the USB-C port.

Limited edition variants include a B. Duck model with a yellow body, 16GB of RAM, 512B of storage, and a $749 price tag (or $699 for early bird consumers), as well as a Panda model.
