Aleksandar Mitrovic Breaks Highest-Scoring English League Season Record

Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic is an unstoppable force, and his record-breaking season proves it. The Serbian striker has scored an incredible 43 goals in the Championship this season, surpassing Guy Whittingham’s previous record of 42, which was set in the 1992-93 season.

With only one game remaining of this Championship season, Mitrovic’s two-goal contribution to  Fulham’s 7-0 demolition of Luton Town has ensured that his name will go down in history. The Serbian striker is now the highest-scoring player in an English league season for over half a century.

Fulham’s comprehensive thrashing of  Luton also clinched them the Championship title, and Mitrovic’s goals were instrumental in their promotion to the Premier League. This will be the fourth time in seven seasons that the Serbian striker has been promoted to or relegated from the English top league.

Signed for Newcastle United in 2015, it took Mitrovic just one season to fire the Magpies back to the Premier League after they had been relegated to the Championship.

After he moved to Fulham early in the 2017-18 campaign while they were still in the Championship, he helped the Cottagers win promotion to the Premier League. However, since then, Fulham have bounced back and forth between the top two divisions.

Aleksandar Mitrovic Breaks Highest-Scoring English League Season Record

This season, it is Fulham’s turn to achieve promotion, and, with Mitrovic leading the charge, they look well-equipped to make a success of their return to the Premier League. This will make match betting on the Premier League next season an exciting prospect when Fulham are playing.

There’s no doubt that Mitrovic is a prolific goalscorer. With 28 goals in 43 league appearances, he’s certainly made his mark on the Championship this season. And with 12 of those fixtures being multi-goal games, it’s clear that he knows how to find the back of the net.

But it’s not just the quantity of goals that Mitrovic has scored that is impressive; it’s also the quality. He has scored some crucial goals for Fulham this season, including hat-tricks against Swansea and West Brom. And also against Bristol City in January,  in the middle of Fulham’s run of 19 goals in 3 games. This run included five goals from Mitrovic, who also scored twice in both fixtures against QPR,  at home to Millwall, Peterborough, Preston and now Luton, and away at Birmingham and Nottingham forest.

Viewers of  The Championship may have become accustomed to seeing Mitrovic finding the back of the net on a regular basis. Starting in all but two games and substituted in only 10, and then usually in the closing stages of the game, Mitrovic has been a critical player for Fulham this season. He has scored, on average, once every 93 minutes and 42 seconds, including stoppage time. He’s managed to get at least one in the net against 20 different opponents in The Championship. It was Coventry who were the first team to stop Mitrovic from scoring in two appearances this season.

Mitrovic is a formidable goalscorer, and his record-breaking season in the Championship proves it. But will he be able to replicate this form in the Premier League and break Fulham’s cycle of promotion and relegation? Only time will tell.
