Real Betis have won the 21/22 Copa del Rey, defeating Valencia 5-4 on penalties after staying 1-1 following 120 minutes of action.
Borja Iglesias scored for Betis early on, before his goal was cancelled out by Hugo Duro to make it level again for the remainder of the game.
Juan Miranda scored the decisive penalty in the shootout, while Yunus Mudah missed for the opponents as they stumbled to a defeat in the finals.
With their win in the league cup, Real Betis have now been guaranteed a spot in next season’s Europa League even if they don’t make it to the top six. But their focus will now be to potentially move past Atletico Madrid into fourth place to return to the Champions League next season.
Real Betis win Copa del Rey after dramatic final against Valencia
“To win this title after so many years at our town and in-front our fans is a wonderful thing,” captain Joaquin told reporters before lifting the trophy and becoming the first player to win two titles with Betis’ colors as he was in the field 17 years ago.
“I think it is the work of many years, of getting things little by little, building from a lot of effort. Congratulations to Valencia because if they had won they would be deserved winners, it was an amazing game.”
Joaquin first lifted the Copa del Rey at the age of 23, and now, he has achieved the feat again in front of their home fans.
