The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1’s performance has been the point of concern or debate by many and all of the new flagships using this chip have struggled to keep it cool. Using a 4nm node by Samsung has cost Qualcomm the efficiency of the chip but still, the flagship performance is noteworthy.
While the Dimensity 9000 is also very powerful against the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the cooling of these smartphones is very important to keep the chipset away from bleeding. Yes, it throttles a lot in a flagship smartphone like the OnePlus 10 Pro, which by the way is already in our hands for review for quite a while.
We will soon publish its full review but the notable thing to discuss here will be the throttling test of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 you will find inside this flagship OnePlus 10 Pro. As you see in the screenshots of Geekbench 5 results, we ran the tests three times at a stretch and you will see a very noticeable difference in the scores.
At the first, we got a score of 972 points in single-core and 3411 points in multi-core while you get 825 points and 3393 points respectively in the next run. There’s a huge drop in peak single-core performance in just 1 run and that goes to show this is not consistent in keeping that high clock speed that Qualcomm brags about.
After that in the third run too, you have a similar score of 826 and 3387 points in single-core and multi-core respectively. Well, obviously you won’t notice the decrease in performance until you use benchmarks but the bragging of having huge clock speeds is fake because none of the smartphones can sustain it even after 2-3 minutes of a benchmark.
In the CPU throttling test, you will see we did three tests, the first one being a 20 threads test and you see the CPU throttle to only 87% of its performance after 8 minutes of the run while in the 50 threads test, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 drops to 88% but the temperatures were close to 50 degrees celsius.
So, the throttling is evident and almost all smartphones have throttled in the test done by Beebom off late, however, we see the better flagship which houses a capable cooling solution will only be able to keep up in these kinds of tests. In our case here, the OnePlus 10 Pro also throttles and that cannot be undone but up to 79% which is still a good sign for the company.
Well, we will be doing a longer CPU throttling test in our review, give benchmarks and our opinion on this OnePlus flagship soon, so stay tuned!
