Intel announces new Gemini Lake Refresh entry-level CPUs

Intel’s next laptop series CPUs will be the 10nm based Tiger Lake-U series which will directly compete against AMD’s Ryzen 4000 mobile APUs. Already it’s leaks are flooding all over the internet and now spotted to run on a Surface Laptop.

Microsoft has been fond of lastest hardware on their laptops and their last Surface laptop series featured the latest 10th gen CPUs. So Microsoft might launch new Surface laptops later this year when Tiger Lake-U series launches with select Project Athena laptops.

The Tiger Lake CPUs should bring significant upgrades including Gen 12 Xe iGPUs with 12-bit HEVC hardware decoding, PCIe 4.0 support, Thunderbolt 4 and LPDDR5 RAM. Some early tests in the 3DMark database have been spotted by twitter user _rogame which suggests that the performance is on par with AMD’s Renoir APUs.

The user _rogame spotted a 2.7 GHz Tiger Lake-U CPU scoring 8,412 points in Physics test while scoring 5,540 points in the graphics test. But _rogname is also confident that the database report which actually shows default and boosts clocks close to 1.2 GHz is wrong.

10 nm Intel Tiger Lake-U CPU spotted in a Microsoft Surface Laptop

This Tiger Lake-U CPU is expected to have a default clock set to 2.7 GHz and the boost clock at 4.3 GHz. Since these are early leaks so with further tweaks and better cooling you might expect better performance from these CPUs, making them competitive to AMD’s Ryzen 7 4700U and 4800U processors.

Intel’s new iGPU may end up being 10 to 20% faster than that of the Ryzen 7 4800U, even though being slower based on the test scores.

The laptop used for the 3DMark test also integrates with SSD which is found only on Surface laptops. Earlier tests also showed that there will be AMD powered Surface laptops which raises the possibility that Microsoft will probably be looking to diversify its offerings this year.
