Cesar Azpilicueta has extended his contract with Chelsea after a clause involving the number of appearances was automatically triggered. His deal with the Blues now expires in June 2023, and he could stay on for another year as the captain of the club.

The player and his agent were in talks with Barcelona regarding a free transfer in the summer. The Spanish giants offered the defender a 2+1 year contract, which Chelsea were not willing to match.

Cesar Azpilicueta likely to stay on as Chelsea captain

The 32-year-old is the first player in the history of the Blues to win each and every trophy available. He has captained the Blues to the Europa League and Champions League trophies, and has also lifted the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Cup in the past year alone.

César Azpilicueta has now extended his contract with Chelsea until June 2023, Tuchel confirms: “Yes, it was so close – and it now happened. It’s good news for us”. 🔵 #CFC

Cesar Azpilicueta is among the most consistent players to have ever played in the Premier League. He has rarely conceded an error leading to a goal, and has been able to guide the club to some of their highest points in recent years.

Thomas Tuchel is confident that his captain will be staying on for another year. But, there is a chance that he could yet be allowed to leave if Barcelona pay a small transfer fee and the player actually wants to leave.

Andreas Christensen is all but confirmed as a new Barcelona player, having agreed to a free transfer with the Blaugrana. Franck Kessie from AC Milan has also agreed personal terms with the Spanish giants, and will be playing for them next season.
