Ligue 1 side Lyon have confirmed the signing of Brazilian winger Tete from Shakhtar Donetsk. The player has been signed until the end of the season, with FIFA allowing other clubs to sign Ukrainian players due to the hostile invasion carried out by Russia.
“The arrival of Tete thus reinforces the squad of Peter Bosz, at the dawn of the run-in in Ligue 1,” Lyon said in a statement.
The 22-year-old has made 108 appearances since joining Shakhtar from Brazilian side Gremio in 2019, scoring 31 goals in all competitions. He helped them win the Ukrainian Cup in 2019 and the Ukrainian Premier League title twice.
Lyon sign Tete from Shakhtar after emergency signing scheme comes into play
Lyon are struggling to perform in Ligue 1 this season. They are currently in tenth place, with nine games remaining this season. Given their current form, they are almost certain to miss out on European football next year.
However, they have a quarter final meeting against West Ham United in the Europa League this season. If they win their encounter against the Premier League outfit, they might be facing Barcelona in the semifinals.
Tete can provide a boost to the side offensively, having competed in the Europa League with Shakhtar beforehand. The left-footed winger can be a key replacement for Xherdan Shaqiri. He has the ability to create chances, as well as score, and can provide a boost to Peter Bosz’s side if he can adapt to the French league quickly.
