Recently, AMD launched its powerful Ryzen 4000 mobile processors for laptops based on its revolutionary 7nm based Zen 2 architecture. The Red team announced that the new Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 would be one of the first laptops to feature the Ryzen APUs with up to 8 cores on an ultra-thin form factor.
The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 has been launched at the CES 2020 is a 14-inch FreeSync display notebook featuring a 1920×1080 IPS display. It is powered with up to the flagship 8 core/ 16 threads monster – the AMD Ryzen 7 4800U which is clocked up to 1.8GHz base clock speed and a 4.2GHz boost along with 12MB of the total cache.
The Ryzen 4000 APUs consume only 15W of TDP and the flagship Ryzen 7 4800U features 8 compute units of the Vega graphics clocked up to 1750MHz. The laptop is coupled with up to 16 GB of LPDDR4X memory and up to a 1 TB NVMe SSD.
On the ports & connectivity front, we have two USB 3.2 ports, one multi-mode Type-C port, 802.11ac WiFi, and an IR camera. The Yoga Slim 7 is truly thin as it has only 14.9 mm of thickness i.e. 0.58 inches.
The battery has got a decent upgrade, now comes with 60.7 Wh battery which Lenovo states can easily last for up to 14 hours, which would be a significant uplift in mobile battery efficiency from an AMD SoC, thanks to the 7nm process and AMD’s performance optimizations.
The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 series will be available with Intel CPUs as well, featuring up to 10th Gen Intel Ice Lake Core i7-1065G7 CPU, you can opt for optional NVIDIA MX GPU as well for the Intel laptops which is not needed if you are going with an AMD variant.
AMD at the keynote showed that the new iGPU provides +28% better GPU performance in 3D Mark Time Spy against Intel’s Core i7-1065G7. When compared in the single-threaded performance, the Ryzen 4000 processors dominate over both Ice Lake and Comet Lake.
In multi-threaded workloads, the Ryzen 7 4800U just blows Intel’s flagship Core i7-1065G7 away from the competition. So, it’s clear that AMD Ryzen 4000 powered Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 series is the perfect ultra-thin notebook which is both powerful and efficient.
Talking about the pricing, Lenovo states that the AMD variants have a starting pricing of $699 even though they have not disclosed the exact processor/memory/storage configuration. For the Intel variant, you have to spend a whopping $1210 and availability of the laptops in the market starts from April 2020.
