Cesar Azpilicueta became the first Chelsea player to win every available trophy for the club, as he lifted the FIFA Club World Cup as their captain.
But, his contract with the club runs out at the end of the season. And so far, he has been unable to reach an agreement with the board for a renewal. As a result, he might be leaving the club for free when his deal runs out in June.
Cesar Azpilicueta in talks with Barcelona
The Chelsea captain is reportedly in advanced negotiations with Barcelona, to potentially move back home. The report comes from Sport, which states that the two parties are close to reaching an agreement on personal terms.
Azpilicueta has spent a decade with Chelsea, and was signed as an unknown player for £7 million. During his time at the club, he has established himself as an icon, and having won the complete set, he is right up there with the best of the best in Chelsea history.
Alongside their skipper, Chelsea could end up losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen at the end of the campaign too. The two central defenders have the same contract situation and have been unable to reach an agreement for a new deal.
Christensen has attracted interest from Bayern Munich, but could also be headed to Barcelona alongside Cesar Azpilicueta. Rudiger has been offered multiple new deals, but has rejected all advances. Despite that, the newly crowned Club World Cup winners are confident of reaching an agreement with the German for a new contract.
