India witnesses a 11% growth in smartphone shipments in 2021; Xiaomi leads the pack with 24% market share

Smartphone shipments in the Indian market have witnessed a growth of 11% year-on-year in the year 2021, in spite of multiple issues plaguing the smartphone industry such as the shortage of components and supply chain disruption.

The latest report from Counterpoint Research adds that the country witnessed 169 million units in terms of shipments in 2021 alone. However, the Q4 of 2021 witnessed an 8% decline.

Xiaomi has managed to retain its position at the top with 24% of the market share. Unlike previous years, the company’s growth was limited to just 2% year-on-year growth.

The good news for Xiaomi is that it has managed to get more share under the premium segment this time, it witnessed a growth of 258%. It is notable that the report considers devices priced above 30,000 INR as premium devices.

South Korean giant Samsung came in second with a market share of 18% while Vivo took the third spot as the company managed to secure 15% of the market share, followed by Vivo’s sister companies Realme and Oppo with 14% and 10% market share respectively.

Coming to the 5G smartphones, Samsung emerges as the leading brand in the Indian market in Q4 of 2021. Samsung also led in the mid-range segment with a 28% market share. The brand has also managed to increase its share by triple digits in the foldable smartphones category.

Apple has emerged as the fastest-growing smartphone brand in 2021 with 108% year-on-year growth. It led the premium segment in India with a massive 44% market share and the brand is now adopting an aggressive approach in the country, which could further help cement its position in the premium category.
