Giovanni Lo Celso has left Tottenham Hotspur to join Villarreal as part of a deadline day deal. The Argentinian midfielder will be on loan with the Europa League winners until the end of the season.
A total agreement has been reached between the two clubs, and the transfer has now been made official by them as well. Lo Celso joined the club as part of Mauricio Pochettino’s final transfer window with the club, following the 2019 Champions League final. However, things haven’t worked out as expected for the player.
Giovanni Lo Celso returns to La Liga
The Argentina international made a name for himself as part of the Real Betis squad, which helped him earn his place in the Premier League. But, injuries have hampered his progress with the London club in his two-and-a-half years with them.
He was previously close to joining Lyon in the transfer window, but the deal fell through in the last few days. Unai Emery was key in convincing Giovanni Lo Celso to choose Villarreal on deadline day. After the former Arsenal man asked his club to sign the player at all costs, he now has the man he wants.
Being familiar with the way things work in La Liga, Lo Celso can help provide a boost to their chances of finishing in the top spots in the league this term. Lo Celso becomes yet another midfield departure for Spurs, after Tanguy Ndombele returned to Lyon on loan.
