Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium and completed the league double over them. In the process, they have effectively ended Chelsea’s hopes of mounting a challenge for the Premier League title.
The European Champions are now 13 points behind Pep Guardiola’s men. Manchester City are on a 12-game winning streak in the Premier League and it seems very unlikely that they will lose four games for Thomas Tuchel’s side to catch up.
To do so alone would require the London club to win every game between now and the end of the season, which seems very unlikely.
Chelsea’s title ambitions seemingly ended by Manchester City themselves
Kevin De Bruyne scored against his former club yet again, and it was his remarkable effort that made the difference in the game. Chelsea never looked like scoring, or winning the game, and have deservingly been defeated.
On the other hand, City managed to press the visitors very effectively throughout the game and were very menacing with their fast attacking line-up of Sterling, Grealish and Foden, which was very difficult for the Blues to deal with.
Liverpool are now the only other club in the race for the Premier League title. They currently have a game in hand on the league leaders, but will have to win all their games if they want to compete for the title.
Given the form that Manchester City have been in, it seems almost certain that they will be lifting the title at the end of the season.
