Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal: 10-man Gunners hold on to stay level at Anfield

Liverpool and Arsenal played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi final tie at Anfield. The visitors were down to ten men after only 24 minutes, with Granit Xhaka sent off for denying Diogo Jota a clear goalscoring opportunity.

However, despite having an extra man for the majority of the game, Liverpool were unable to take advantage of the situation. They were without their two key attackers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, both of whom are currently representing their countries in the AFCON.

Liverpool fail to take advantage of 10-man Arsenal

The fixture was originally set to be held last week, but was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the Liverpool camp. Jurgen Klopp returned to the touchline after isolating due to a positive coronavirus test as well.

Arsenal had to deal with an injury to Cedric Soares in the initial minutes before having to replace Eddie Nketiah to make room for Rob Holding in defense.

Liverpool were on the front foot right from the beginning, pinning the Gunners back into their own box. Bukayo Saka was responsible for the majority of their attacking display, having been released on the counter. But, he was unable to make anything happen for his side, who were without a shot on target in a Cup tie once again.

Takumi Minamino had the best chance to score in injury time, but ultimately could not beat Aaron Ramsdale in goal.

The return leg of the fixture will be played at the Emirates where we will see who joins Chelsea in the final of the competition.
