Lorenzo Insigne has reached an agreement with Canadian club Toronto FC to join them as a free agent at the end of the season. The player’s contract with Napoli is expiring at the end of the season, and they haven’t offered their captain a satisfactory deal.
The Italian is set to become the highest earner in the history of MLS, with a salary worth £11 million per season. It is almost double that of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at LA Galaxy, the previous holder of the record.
“This a historic and exciting day for our club,” said Toronto president Bill Manning.
“Lorenzo is a world-class attacking player in the prime of his career. He was a European champion with Italy and has performed on the biggest stages during his club career with Napoli.”
Lorenzo Insigne to link up with Toronto FC in the summer
The winger is contracted to Napoli until the end of the season, and wants to play out the rest of the season with his boyhood club. He will link up with the MLS side in the summer, when the season is over.
This summer, he was one of the key players for Italy as they lifted the European Championship for the first time in over 50 years.
At 30, Insigne is still at his peak, and the decision to move to Toronto might be a little too soon, considering he can still play at the top level in Europe. But, the contract has now been signed, and it is only a matter of time before we see him in the American league.
