Intel has unveiled the rest of its Alder Lake desktop portfolio at CES 2022: 22 new processors, ranging in price from $489 for the Core i9-12900 to $42 for the Celeron G6900, are aimed at mainstream desktops, all-in-ones, and other PC designs.
Now, Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake chips were technically released for desktops last fall, but the portfolio was somewhat limited at the time: only six chips (three if you don’t count the variations sans GPUs as different models), almost exclusively aimed at high-end gaming configurations.
There’s a lot of repetition here, to be sure. Many of the new chips, such as the top-of-the-line Core i9-12900, are quite similar to the first wave of unlocked CPUs Intel introduced last autumn, but with reduced power demands (the new wave of chips mostly runs at 65W) and no overclocking option. Intel is also releasing low-power 35W “T-series” versions of most of its CPUs, as well as its typical “F-series” models without integrated graphics.
The new Alder Lake chips, like their more powerful predecessors, use Intel’s hybrid architectural design, which combines performance and efficiency cores (the number of which varies depending on the chip) to maximize power and efficiency.
Intel is expanding its ecosystem of motherboards and coolers to go along with the new CPUs. On the motherboard side, the H670, B660, and H610 join the top-of-the-line Z690 boards as three new consumer-focused SKUs for its 600 series chipset. The new models have fewer PCIe lanes and USB ports than the Z690, but they still support significant new technologies like Wi-Fi 6E and PCIe 4.0.
The Intel Laminar RH1, which has RGB lighting and will be included with the i9 models; the Intel Laminar RM1, for the Core i7, Core i5, and Core i3 chips; and the Intel Laminar RS1 for Pentium and Celeron chips are all new coolers that Intel will be bundling in with the more powerful 65W versions of its chips.
The new 65W and 35W 12th Gen Alder Lake chips for desktops are available starting today.
