The Game Awards honour creative and technical achievements in the video game industry around the world.
Geoff Keighley, a media entrepreneur who both hosts and produces the show, launched the Game Awards in 2014.
To celebrate and improve gaming’s status as the most immersive, demanding, and inspiring form of entertainment, we bring together a varied mix of game developers, game players, and significant figures from popular culture. They try to honour those who contribute to the community’s well-being and elevate voices representing the medium’s future.
This year the Game Awards premiered on 10 December 2021. This is the most recent edition of a yearly occurrence that expands in scope and grandeur with each passing year.
While the event began as a celebration of the finest PC and Xbox games of the year, it has since expanded to include game announcements from various publishers and studios. This year’s expo was huge, with a slew of announcements and improvements that signalled the direction of video games in the coming year.
The Game Awards 2021 will feature games and announcements for almost every modern gaming platform, including PS5, Xbox One, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PC, Xbox Game Pass, and more. Some of these titles may even make an appearance at a future The Game Awards event to accept an award.
Naturally, the focus of the presentation was on the winners of The Game Awards 2021, which included some of the year’s most significant and exciting games. In case you missed it, the Windows Central Game Awards 2021 showcased our best games of 2021 across various categories, with Resident Evil Village taking home the Game of the Year prize.
If you weren’t able to see the performance live, here’s everything you missed:
The Game Awards- Unreal Engine allows you to explore the Matrix:
Epic’s latest Unreal Engine 5 demo isn’t just a lovely cinematic; it’s also an interactive feature that you can download for free on a PlayStation 5 right now.
Even better, it’s a chance to get a first glimpse into The Matrix’s cyberpunk world ahead of the fourth film’s release later this month – which we also got a first look at tonight. Check out our interview with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss for even more.
Alan Wake 2 is the second installment in the Alan Wake series, and it takes the franchise into survival horror territory:
The Game Awards announced that Alan Wake will get a sequel, which is one of the biggest surprises. We don’t know much about it yet, but the series’ creative director, Sam Lake, believes it’ll take a survival horror turn.
With the equally frightening title Slitterhead, Bokeh Game Studio, founded by Silent Hill founder Keiichiro Toyama, previewed a terrifying new game. I can’t even embed the trailer since it’s so frightening.
The Game Awards revealed that Elden Ring continues to amaze us:
We’ve already seen a lot of Elden Ring and even played a tiny bit of it — but that doesn’t mean we won’t keep watching trailers.
The latest is more story-driven than gameplay-driven, which makes the game’s February release all the more difficult to wait for.
The Game Awards – An in-depth look at the Suicide Squad video game:
It’s been a long time since Rocksteady — best known for the Arkham series of Batman games — stated that it was working on a Suicide Squad game, but due to a new teaser, we now have a better look at Kill the Justice League.
The game will be released in 2022, making it Rocksteady’s first new title in nearly seven years.
Coming straight from the Game Awards, Wonder Woman will get her own game in the near future:
The Game Awards stunned us by announcing that in other DC news, Monolith Productions, the studio responsible for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, is developing a Wonder Woman game.
It’ll be a third-person action game using Mordor’s infamous “nemesis system.” There’s no information on a release date or platform.
The PC version of Final Fantasy VII is finally here:
One of the announcements we heard in the Game Awards was The formerly PlayStation-only recreation of legendary Final Fantasy VII is now available on PC — and it’ll be here shortly.
The improved Intergrade version, which previously graced the PS5, will be released on December 16th.
A Star Wars game is being developed by Quantic Dream – The Game Awards
Quantic Dream, the dubious Detroit: Become Human developer, is now working on a Star Wars game. Eclipse is the title of the game, which takes place during the High Republic era and is characterized as “An intricately branching action-adventure game that can be experienced in many ways, and puts the destinies of multiple playable characters in your hands.”
There’s no information yet on when the game will be released or which platforms it will be available on.
The Game Awards announced that, The live-action Halo series has a new trailer:
While everyone is enthralled by Halo Infinite, another major addition to the Halo universe is on the way. We got our first true look at the live-action Halo TV show that will premiere on Paramount Plus early next year during the Game Awards.
Among Us is coming to virtual reality:
The social deduction hit Among Us is already available on a variety of devices, but its upcoming release will include something new: virtual reality.
The new version, created by VR studio Schell Games (I Expect You to Die), will transform the game from a fun 2D game to a first-person 3D experience. There’s no news on when it’ll be released, but it’ll be available for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR, and Steam VR devices.
Games from Google Play are coming to PC:
Google unveiled a new tool that will allow PC users to play Android games via Google Play. We don’t know much about it yet, but it’s planned to be released in 2022.
Sonic x2:
In addition to the surprising announcement of Sonic Frontiers, a new “open zone” game, the most recent attempt at creating an excellent 3D Sonic The Hedgehog, we also got a sneak peek (and listen) at the 2020 sequel to the live-action Sonic film, which includes Idris Elba as Knuckles.
Dune: Spice Wars is a real-time strategy game:
Spice Wars, a real-time strategy game developed by Shiro Games, is planned to expand the Dune universe. In 2022, an early access version of the game will be released for PC.
Hellblade 2 has a long, unsettling trailer:
From the landscape you’ll be rushing through to the eerie monsters you’ll face, the sequel to Hellblade – a terrifying game about madness — appears to be greater in almost every way. In a nutshell, it seems to be terrifying, but this full new teaser gives you a fair idea of what to expect.
The expansion for Cuphead has been updated:
We haven’t heard anything from Studio MDHR in a long time about Cuphead’s next expansion, The Delicious Last Course; but thankfully, because of the Game Awards, not only do we have a new look, but we also have a release date: on June 30th, 2022, the DLC will be available on all Cuphead platforms.
The Game Awards announced Another mellow League of Legends collection:
Riot produced a relaxing album full of copyright-free music made exclusively for streamers this summer. It has now released its second album, Diana, which comprises 43 tracks composed by 25 different musicians and is centred on the League figure. It’s currently accessible to listen to on Spotify and Apple Music.
PUBG is now available for free, announced in the Game Awards:
Yes, you read that right, the Game awards announced that PUBG is going to be available for free, and we can’t keep calm. The genre-defining combat royale PUBG has finally gone free to play, years after its first release.
The update puts Fortnite and Apex Legends on an equal footing (along with the mobile spinoffs PUBG Mobile and PUBG: New State) this should help to keep the competitive environment in the game alive for the next few years.
A Telltale-style adventure is being developed for Star Trek:
Among all the announcements made in the Games Awards, this is one of the most exciting. For a future Star Trek game, Dramatic Labs, a new studio made up of veterans from the ill-fated adventure game developer Telltale, employs the same choose-your-own-adventure structure. Resurgence is the title, and the studio claims it presents a brand-new story set not long after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Next spring, it will be available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the Epic Games Store.
…and Telltale is working on a new game based on the Expanse franchise:
Meanwhile, Telltale’s resurrected version is developing a sci-fi game based on The Expanse. It’s being co-developed by Deck Nine, the company behind Life is Strange, as a prequel to the Amazon Prime series.
The Game Awards – Scott Pilgrim vibes abound in Thirsty Suitors:
Thirsty Suitors is the latest game from Outerloop Games, the creators of the Falcon Age series, and it’s described as “a narrative action-adventure game that grapples with themes of complex family dynamics, navigating difficult relationships, and discovering one’s true self.”
It also has a distinct Scott Pilgrim feel to it, with clashes against ex-lovers and Tony Hawk-style skateboarding. The PC version of the Annapurna-published game is advertised as “coming soon.”
The Game Awards unveiled that, Tunic, CrossfireX, and Lost Ark will be released on the following dates:
There were a few additional release dates tucked in amongst all of the promos and presentations. Tunic, a Zelda-like game for Xbox and PC, will be released on March 16th, and we’ve got a sweet new trailer to go with it.
On February 8th, Smilegate and Remedy will release CrossfireX, an upcoming Xbox shooter. (The single-player campaign was handled by Remedy, while Smilegate worked on the multiplayer.) Meanwhile, Amazon has announced that Lost Ark, an MMO, will be released on Steam on February 11th.
