Odisha FC edged past a determined NorthEast United FC with a 1-0 win in the ISL to go second. Here are the three key talking points from the game.

Odisha FC: A team reborn

In the previous season, Odisha FC finished last in the table. With the strong start that they have had to the season, they have carved out a new identity for themselves. Even in tight games like the one today, they managed to hold on until the final whistle and sit on a one goal lead.

Their performance today was a testament to their quality and proof of how much they have improved over the course of the off-season.

Missed chances haunt NorthEast United

NorthEast United had a baffling game in terms of numbers. They had 15 shots in the game in comparison to 9 from the winners. But, of the 15, only two were on target with 13 attempts going wide.

Despite Odisha enjoying significantly more possession, the Highlanders looked more threatening. And they could’ve easily had a number of goals to their name today. But, their efforts barely fit the frame.

The lack of clinical finishing has led to them dropping three points in a game where they could’ve easily emerged as the winners.

Title race heating up

Mumbai City FC have 12 points from five games, while Odisha have 9 points from four. If Odisha win their game in hand, they are level on points with the Islanders. And all of a sudden, the advantage doesn’t look so large for Mumbai.

Given the performances that they have been showing this season, the Kalinga Warriors have inserted themselves in the race for the title, and could find themselves at the top of the pile in due course.
