Real Madrid defeated Inter Milan 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu to win their Champions League group. Inter had to play with a man down for the last half an hour of the game, as Nicolo Barella was sent off.
The midfielder was challenged by Eder Militao, and lashed out by punching the back of his leg from the ground. He was instantly sent off by the referee, and will miss the first knockout stage game.
Toni Kroos opened the scoring for Los Blancos in the 17th minute. The German midfielder collected the ball in a good position outside the box and launched a thunderous effort to score Real Madrid’s 1000th European Cup goal. It was a goal fully deserving of the feat, and Kroos has now become etched in Real Madrid history even further.
Inter Milan created a number of meaningful chances themselves. Particularly, Marcelo Brozovic, who took a number of long range efforts in the opening half. However, they were unable to beat Thibaut Courtois between the sticks.
Marco Asensio buried the game for the home team in the second half, curling his effort into the top left corner. Dani Carvajal provided the assist for the substitute to finish things off. While the scoreline only reads two goals to their name, Madrid could have scored many more since they have had the upper hand over Inter throughout the game.
With their mission accomplished, Real Madrid will face one of the teams that finish second in their group once the draws are out. Inter, on the other hand, will take on one of the group winners.
