Samsung already working on DDR6-12800 memory & while GDDR7 for GPUs speeds up to 32 Gbps

The South Korean giant is in no mood to stop its run of form and looks to pull ahead in this race by developing high-end memory modules to attract more customers. Already it seems to have lured AMD with its advanced 3nm process, the company looks to be developing some of the industry’s best RAMs and memory modules.

Fortunately, ComputerBase has recently shared information from Samsung Tech Day 2021. While this was not made public, however, it is where the South Korean company shared a lot of info including ts future roadmaps and innovations dedicated to its memory technology.

As we know, DDR5 mass production has already started following the of 12th Gen Intel Alder Lake-S desktop processors, Samsung is keen on investing its money and time behind the DDR6 RAM. Also, GPUs have become much more superior than before, so, higher bandwidth memory is needed to make them faster, here too Samsung is up against the likes of Micron with plans for GDDR7 memory.

Though the DDR6 standard has not yet been formalized by JEDEC, however, the speeds could reach up to a whopping 12800 Mbit/s by default. As the technology is in its development, Samsung cannot disclose the numbers, however, ComputerBase has reported that the overclocked DDR6 memory could go up to an immense 17000 Mbit/s.

In terms of improvements or upgrades, the DDR6 memory could feature up to four channels per module (doubled compared to DDR5) while the number of memory banks will increase to 64, quadrupling over the already seen DDR4 standard.

If you are concerned about what is further the GDDR6 memory, it has also been disclosed that GDDR6+ and GDDR7 will follow. As an improvement over the current GDDR6 memory we see on most modern GPUs, the new GDDR6+ standard will offer speeds as high as 24 Gbps. This could easily take on the current GDDR6X memory standard by Micron we see on the flagship RTX 30-series GPUs.

Not only this, the GDDR7 memory standard seems to be on track by Samsung but there is no date of launch or so. In terms of performance or features, it is suspected that GDDR7 might feature a memory bandwidth up to 32 Gbps and feature a ‘real-time error protection feature’.

Lastly, ComputerBase also reported that Samsung will be starting the mass production of HBM3 (High-Bandwidth-Memory Gen3) memory, which has huge upgrades over the current HBM2, in the second quarter of 2022.
