Qualcomm now looking to surpass Apple’s M-series with the release of its new high-performance Arm-based SoC for Windows PC’s

Finally, Qualcomm is making its stand clear and is ready to announce to the world that it’s not going to stand in second place and watch its rival Apple blow up the laptop market with its class-leading M-series chips.

Qualcomm has just announced its first serious high-performance Arm-based SoC for Windows Pcs and the chipmaker even went as to call out Apple’s class-leading silicon claiming that its chip will be an “M-series competitive solution for the PC”.

It’s announced by the chipmaker that the first samples of this new high-end chip will be reaching PC makers in around nine months with the first devices fitted with them reaching the market in 2023. Qualcomm is targeting big performance and efficiency increases across both CPU and Adreno GPU cores.

The announcement was made by Qualcomm’s chief technology officer, Dr. James Thompson at the company’s 2021 investor day event. And it seems that the company is not just targeting Apple but is looking to even topple Intel as well. Qualcomm is claiming that these new chips are “Designed to set the performance benchmark for Windows PCs”.

Apple’s M1 Pro and M1 Max chips have proven themselves to be as powerful as Intel’s consumer desktop chips, and thus it makes sense that what Qualcomm is cooking up could pose a genuine threat to Intel in the Windows PC market. Well, that’s only assuming it can beat Apple’s M-series chips.

All of Qualcomm’s efforts to prove itself the best chip for Windows on Arm space hasn’t proven itself to be amazing yet. The Snapdragon 8cx Gen1 and Gen 2 have offered strong battery life in devices like the Samsung Galaxy Book S, but performance is not up to par with what Apple and Intel have to offer.
