Andriy Shevchenko has been appointed as the new manager of Serie A club Genoa. The club sacked Davide Ballardini on Saturday after a very poor start to the season. Genoa have announced that their new coach has signed a contract until 2024.

Genoa is the oldest club in Italy, and was acquired by American owners 777 Partners this summer. They have decided to pull the trigger on Ballardini after only one win in twelve games.

The 45-year-old has been appointed as the manager of a professional club for the first time. He managed the Ukraine national team for the last five years, and did a remarkable job with them. In Euro 2020, Shevchenko’s Ukraine progressed to the quarter finals before being defeated by England 4-0 in Rome.

“Genoa announces that Andriy Shevchenko has reached an agreement with 777 Partners and will lead the Grifone until June 30, 2024,” Genoa said in a statement.

“Genoa and 777 Partners warmly welcome coach Shevchenko and wish him a fruitful time in charge of the oldest club in Italy.”

Shevchenko is an AC Milan legend, and scored 175 goals in 324 matches. He won the Serie A title with Milan and the 2003 Champions League title with the Rossoneri. He also finished as the top scorer in Italy twice during his two spells with the club.

Now, he has returned to Serie A as a manager and will have the task of helping Genoa avoid the drop. They only have nine points from twelve games and are one place above the relegation zone right now.
