Expectedly, Microsoft’s Xbox Series S and X consoles are doing much better than the Xbox One in Japan. According to the latest sales update from Japanese magazine Famitsu, the Xbox Series S has sold 2,920 units this past week and the Xbox Series X sold 527 units.
Combined both the consoles have sold 102,591 units which are 64,284 units of the Series X and 38,307 units of the Series S less than a year after November 10th, 2020 which was their global launch. This is significantly higher than the Xbox One console since the consoles took over four years to sell 100K units in Japan.
However, the sales are still nowhere near that of its rivals from Sony and Nintendo, as Japan’s very own PlayStation 5 console sold 15,885 units the past week between the regular and digital editions, which has resulted in a total of 1.1 million lifetime sales for PlayStation 5 up until now.
Nintendo Switch has sold nearly 179,851 units this past week between the standard edition, the Nintendo Switch Lite, and the new Nintendo Switch OLED. And the lifetime sales of the Nintendo Switch in Japan is a whopping 21.4 million units between the various editions.
But the recent successful sales reports of Xbox Series X|S in Japan show how hard Microsoft is working to attract even more Japanese and Asian customers. And it seems that the company is becoming successful in its attempts, slowly, but surely. I prefer PlayStation though, well, because it has God of War for crying out loud, do you need any other reason?
At the recent Tokyo Game Show event, Microsoft announced the availability of Xbox Cloud Gaming in Japan. The company also announced its commitment to partner with over 200 Japanese indie creators through the ID@Xbox program as well as Game Pass. It’s even planning on full Japanese localization of Bethesda Game Studios’ Sci-Fi RPG Starfield.
