Season 2 of the most awaited Netflix series, The Witcher, will arrive in December and the new season will bring significant expansion in the show’s cast of characters and will bring some notable casting including Bridgerton’s Adjoa Andoh as the priestess Nenneke and Game of Thrones’ Kristofer Hivju as the cursed noble Nivelles.
However, if we talk about a new character that will have a long-lasting impact on the series and the fans, then it will be the legendary witcher who was also the mentor of Geralt of Rivia. Yes, we are talking about Vesermir, who will be played by Kim Bodnia of Killing Eve, despite there being rumors at one point that the role would go to Mark Hamill, oh how I had wished for the rumor to be true.
During Netflix’s Tudum presentation, the streaming giant released a new Witcher franchise trailer, and it came with some never-before-seen footage from Season 2 of the series, including our first up-close look at Bodnia’s portrayal of the famous Witcher.
Netflix has prepared quite well for the arrival of Vesemir as we have witnessed in the amazing anime prequel The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, where a younger version of the character was voiced by Divergent’s Theo James.
The character first made its appearance in Sapkowski’s Witcher novel Blood of Elves, which serves as the source for most of the plot in The Witcher Season 2. Geralt, the protagonist of the series, refers to Vesemir as his father and the old witcher helps train Geralt’s surrogate daughter, the child of surprise, Ciri, at their stronghold of Kaer Morhen.
Although Vesemir is tough on all of his students, he believes that this approach helps give them the strength and determination needed to survive their very dangerous profession.
It’s not just Geralt that treats the old witcher as their father, but, also most of the wolf school witchers do the same and he does his best to protect them as well.
Because the secret to the Trial of the Grasses was lost at the massacre at Kaer Morhen, and Vesemir believes they will be the last students he’ll ever train.
If you are a fan of the Witcher games by CD Projekt Red, then you will find Vesemir in all three installations of the game. And his role is even bigger in the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. He’s one of the first characters that Geralt encounters in The Witcher, serving as a quest giver and guide to navigating Kaer Morhen.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt also opens with Geralt and Vesemir together as they attempt to find the sorceress Yennefer. And we all know what happens at the climax of The Witcher 3, I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t played the game yet.
