Inter Milan have finally got their long-term target Romelu Lukaku in the transfer deadline day.
Romelu Lukaku was finally granted his wish of quitting Manchester United and joining Inter, on Thursday. He joined Inter in a club-record deal reported to be €80million before the Premier League’s transfer window was closed. Lukaku has signed a contract with Inter until June 2024.
Lukaku joined Manchester United from Everton for £75m in 2017. He has spent two seasons at the Old Trafford. He scored 12 Premier League goals in 2018-19 and 15 across all competitions as United finished sixth and lost to Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals last season. He scored a total of 42 goals in 96 appearances for United in his two seasons. But, Solskjaer prefers Rashford more than Lukaku up-front.
Lukaku said: “Inter were the only club I wanted because Inter is Not For Everyone. I’m here to bring the Nerazzurri back to the top. I’m really happy to be here! Thank you for the support. Forza Inter.”
Lukaku also wrote on social media: “To everyone involved with Manchester United – from the board to the manager and his staff, the players, and the fans. Thank you and good luck for the future @manchesterunited.”
Romelu Lukaku has been handed the number nine shirt by Inter in a move that further suggests Mauro Icardi is on his way out of San Siro. Icardi, linked with Juventus and Napoli, had played with the number nine on his back since arriving at the Serie A side in 2013.
Diego Forlan, Samuel Eto’o, Julio Cruz, Hernan Crespo, Ronaldo and Ivan Zamorano have also had the same shirt number over the past two decades.
Inter finished at fourth last season and have last won the Serie A in the 2009-10 season. They now hope to compete again for the Serie A. Lukaku will most probably make his debut for Inter when they face Valencia in a friendly on Saturday before opening their Serie A campaign at home to Lecce on 26th August.
