The finals of the US Open will showcase two extremely talented teenagers, Emma Raducanu and Laylah Fernandez facing off for the title.
The match is going to be the first Grand Slam final pitting teenagers against each other since 1999. It will also be the first where unseeded players have made it into the final game of the competition.
Raducanu became the first player in the history of the sport to enter the final as a qualifier by defeating Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-4 in 84 minutes. The new British number 1 is yet to drop a set in the competition, and continues a miraculous performance in the US Open.
Here is what the 18-year-old had to say about her progression into the final:
‘Honestly the time here has gone so fast, I’ve been taking care of each day and three weeks later I’m in the final, I can’t believe it,’ said Raducanu.
‘You can’t get ahead of yourself and just stay present.
‘Today I wasn’t thinking about anyone else except for myself.
On the other side of the bracket, 19-year-old Laylah Fernandez defeated number 2 Aryna Sabalenka to make it to the finals of the US Open, in a triumphant victory for the youngster.
Here is what Fernandez had to say about her sensational victory in the semifinal, making a strong comeback after lagging behind initially:
‘I have no idea!’ She added: ‘That’s years and years and years of hard work and tears and blood and everything, on court, off court, sacrifices.
‘I just wanted to be in the finals, I really wanted it, & I fought for every point.’
