However, the players from the away side did not respond to the indecent behaviour of the fans in the first half. Although this behaviour by the fans continued and thereafter things escalated when one of the bottles struck Dimitri Payet as he was taking a corner. The French attacker threw the bottle back at the crowd in frustration.

Following Payet’s retaliation, Nice fans charged onto the field and engaged in an altercation with the Marseille players. Even though the securities tried their best to stop this matter, the fight continued and things became worse. Therefore the match was suspended due to this entire brawl.

In the end, Marseille players refused to come out and continue the game as they were concerned. Hence Nice was awarded a 3-0 victory.

Surprisingly, Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere has blamed the Marsielle players for provoking a fight that involved the Nice ultras which in turn resulted in the suspension of the game.

What catalysed things was the reaction of two Marseille players (Alvaro Gonzalez and Matteo Guendouzi) who met the fans.” Jean Pierre gave this statement to RMC.

“It is disappointing that it ends like this. Things are quite clear Marseille’s security should not have come onto the pitch and hit our players. “I don’t really understand why Marseille didn’t restart.”

Regardless of what the president of Nice commented about this situation, Marseille did the right thing as things could have become more ugly if they continued playing the game.
