Sony’s plan to ship out 22 million PS5 units by year-end is on the right track, thanks to AMD

Sony, the company behind PlayStation and games like the God of War franchise, is a huge name in the gaming industry. And when the company holds its earnings call, it’s an event worth looking forward to. In its recent earnings call made by its CFO Hiroki Totoki, Sony has already acquired 22 million AMD chips for its PlayStation 5 console.

As to why this information is significant is because, Sony had previously announced its commitment to selling 22 million units sold by the end of this year, and completely circumvent the chip shortage as a whole. And because Sony has managed to already acquire 22 million AMD chips, speaks volume that Sony is on right track to make its commitments come true.

It’s quite an amazing feat that Sony was able to grab all 22 million chips without much issue owing to the fact the world is currently facing with semiconductor crisis resulting in a shortage of supply. Sony’s CFO didn’t reveal any particular details to shed light on how the company managed to acquire so many chips so fast. However, there are speculations that AMD could have prioritized console chip production over its CPUs and especially RDNA 2 based graphics cards.

But, even if Sony manages to ship out 22 million units, it still seems that this will not be able to meet the actual demand for the PlayStation 5 console. The demand for the next-gen consoles continues to rise, and supply continues to be slow.

Sony, in its previous meeting several months ago with Bloomberg, had warned that the supply will remain in jeopardy until 2022 and that is still a year away. The CFO of the company has even mentioned that even if Sony manages to acquire a lot more devices and components, it will still be difficult to keep up with demand for PS5s.
