Apple’s Silicon M1 chip helped Macs witness their greatest Q2 sales ever. Apple reached 6 million shipments in the second quarter alone. According to reports, this consists of 90% of Macs that were powered by the M1 chips. Apple had introduced 3 new Mac devices in November last year. These were namely the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini all powered by the Apple M1 chip (SoC).

Brady Wang, Associate Director of Counterpoint Research, said, “The M1 can meet most of the general demands. However, it is not only a replacement for the Intel CPU but also allows Apple to develop new apps and create fully controlled ecosystems. Furthermore, M1-powered Macs can help Apple improve its profit margin by increasing Mac store sales and lowering production expenses.”

Apple did well despite component shortage

Apple saw a tremendous 22 percent (YoY) growth in the quarter. This helped the tech mammoth support its 7.5 percent market share in the global PC market. This was commendable because it comes at a time of severe component shortages.

Apple launches new 24-inch iMac with the new M1 chip, starts at ₹ 1,19,900

Apple is gradually shifting its Mac devices to be powered by their own Silicon M1 chip. This first generation of Apple Silicon aims to achieve the balance between performance and power consumption. The company wants to offer a new experience even in times of high computing.

The global PC demand has seen continued growth in Q2 amidst component shortages. The shipments have risen by 15 percent (on-year) to reach 80.1 million units during the quarter. The data was taken from Counterpoint Research’s latest analysis.

Other market leaders

Lenovo maintained its lead in the market in Q2 with a 25% share. HP stood next to at 23 percent share. HP was quite stable in the enterprise market, but decelerating Chromebook shipments offset its growth momentum.

Dell pushed forward its market share to 17 percent. For several months now, the global PC supply chain has been facing component shortages. This has resulted in an imbalance in the market.

“This situation will not improve in the second half of the year. Therefore, we may not see normal seasonal trends in the PC market in 2021, as accumulated orders cannot be fulfilled anytime soon,” the report stated.

Research analyst, William Li, stated, “We expect double-digit shipment growth in 2021 but have reduced the number slightly to factor in component shortages and Chromebook sales slowdown.”
