In a rather surprising turn of events, Granit Xhaka could end up staying at Arsenal this summer. The Switzerland international has been linked with a move away for the last few weeks, but nothing has come to fruition so far.
Roma are the main club interested in his services, but they have had a €12 million + €3 million bid rejected by the London club. According to renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are now willing to offer Xhaka a new contract to extend his stay at the club.
The new deal pays much more than what Roma are offering him, and Xhaka could end up staying if the situation meets his demands. Arsenal are confident that they will extend Xhaka’s contract till 2025, which would be a big turnaround from the situation at the start of the transfer window.
Roma wanted to sign both Rui Patricio and Granit Xhaka from the Premier League, since Jose Mourinho is an admirer of both players. But, while they have Patricio, it seems like they are going to miss out on the latter. Xhaka was stripped of the captain’s armband due to his hot temper, and has faced numerous disciplinary actions on and off the pitch.
Despite all that, he was extremely impressive for Switzerland in their Euro 2020 campaign, helping them overcome the odds and make it past World Cup winners France in the knockout stages. Perhaps the sight of him doing his best in the Euros changed Arsenal’s mind about their midfielder after all.
