Liverpool are interested in signing Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella this summer. The Italy international had a stellar season both for his club, and country. He helped the Nerazzurri win their first Serie A title in over a decade, and helped Italy win their first European title in over 50 years.
Inter see Barella as a crucial player for the future, as well as a future campaign. He was mighty impressive for them throughout the season, and particularly outperformed expectations in the high-stakes league game against Juventus at the San Siro.
Giuseppe Marotta, the CEO of Inter, is already in contact with Barella regarding a contract extension. The club is willing to offer him €4 million per year for his new deal, an upgrade from the €2.6 million he currently earns.
Barella matches Jürgen Klopp’s style of ‘heavy metal football’ and offers a tireless work rate on the pitch. His profile can somewhat be compared to N’Golo Kante of Chelsea, who has a reputation of being a tireless engine in the heart of the park. Barella offers a decent product both going forward and on the back foot.
In the past, Inter have labelled Barella as not for sale. However, things have changed now and they are under severe financial pressure. They had to let go of Antonio Conte and Achraf Hakimi to free up the wage bill and raise funds. So, with a price tag worth €60-70 million on the midfielder, they could be persuaded.
Jürgen Klopp needs to replace Gini Wijnaldum, who left for PSG as a free agent, and Barella could be the perfect replacement for the Dutchman in the Liverpool midfield.
