10 days into the summer transfer window, Lionel Messi is still a free agent and not under contract with Barcelona. While he was officially a Barcelona player, he was the highest-paid footballer in the world, and earned a stunning salary worth €39 million per year according to French publication L’Equipe.

Right now, he is estimated to be losing €100,000 per day that he is without a formal contract with a club. However, despite that, he is expected to sign a new deal within the next few days.

Messi won his first major senior trophy with Argentina today, winning the 2021 Copa America title as his country beat Brazil 1-0. So far, he was focusing alone on national duty and hence, avoided the heavy negotiations with Barcelona regarding a new contract. But now that his efforts for the Albiceleste have paid off, he will renew his contract with his only professional club soon.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner will sign a two-year renewal with Barcelona until 2023, and the signing of the contract is expected to take place in the next few days.

Barcelona are currently in a dire financial condition, and will have to reduce their wage bill considerably despite letting go of numerous talents already. Given the fact that he generates more income for the club than anybody else, his presence at the club will be crucial for them to handle this financial situation in the best way possible.
