UEFA face a downhill legal battle against Super League rebels

According to Sportsmail, UEFA could be forced to compensate Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus with over tens of millions of pounds if they keep on trying to ban the clubs from the Champions League.

The dispute arises from their participation in the formation of the Super League. The fact that they are still in favour of the breakaway competition while most of the other clubs have backed down does not sit well with UEFA. And even though they have been asked to give up their demands for the Super League, the rebel clubs are adamant about their stance.

The Court in Madrid is trying to defend the three club’s rights of wanting to form a breakaway competition and have told UEFA that they could face serious financial and criminal sanctions if they go ahead and decide to ban the three big clubs from the competition.

The judge assigned to the case, Manuel Ruiz de Lara has further gone on to state that the three clubs could receive as much as 20% of their lost revenue from the Champions League if they were to be ruled out of the competition, which poses a problem to the intentions of the governing body. Moreover, the judge has also discouraged UEFA from carrying out their investigation on Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus.

Juventus’ Andrea Agnelli is secure about the stance of his club and the two Clasico clubs: ‘We are not scared of threats and we are confident that our legal action will lead to satisfactory results, but the real success would be if we return to a dialogue,’ he said. ‘We’re absolutely certain we will play Champions League in the 2021-2022 season.’
