Real Madrid’s win over Barcelona on Sunday night matters far beyond the three points it adds to the title race. With Jose Mourinho, the scoreboard is only part of the story.

The Portuguese coach took his place in the Camp Nou dugout as Madrid manager for the first time in 13 years and left with a result that hands Hansi Flick a stack of questions. It also tightens Mourinho’s grip on the Bernabeu. Barcelona’s attack, so feared all season, was smothered, and that deepened the unease left by their midweek defeat to PSG in the Champions League. Mourinho does not merely want your points. He wants you doubting who you are.

The Myth-Maker at Work

Few managers shape a narrative like he does. Before kickoff he described Barcelona as a finished product after three years under Flick, while his own group had barely spent six weeks together. It is a classic Mourinho line, a pre-emptive excuse nobody can fairly dispute. Yet if his side won, it would sting twice as much for the other camp. If this is what you have after three years, imagine what we become in six months.

Barcelona and Real Madrid face off in an El Clasico match at Camp Nou

His second stint began with a few stumbles, but he has made tough calls and reasserted his authority with a lighter touch than many predicted. The numbers backed him up in Barcelona: Madrid produced more expected goals and more big chances than the hosts despite holding only 38% of the ball. Thibaut Courtois dropped out with flu shortly before kickoff, which made Barcelona heavy favourites. An underdog Mourinho, as ever, is a dangerous animal.

An Unlikely Defensive Weapon

His chosen instrument was Bernardo Silva. The former Manchester City playmaker has found life at the Bernabeu bumpy so far, but on this night he received a precise job: shadow Pedri everywhere.

Bernardo Silva, whose defensive role helped Real Madrid contain Barcelona in El Clasico
Bernardo Silva

Madrid matched Barcelona’s midfield trio of Rodri, Pedri and Fermin Lopez man for man. That decision framed the whole contest. Barcelona build with three at the back, which poses a riddle for any side in a standard 4-4-2. Send a midfielder forward and a hole appears behind him. Hold the line of four and the extra defender simply walks the ball upfield, forcing somebody to step out.

Mourinho’s answer was to stop worrying about the first phase of Barcelona’s build-up and attack the second. Jude Bellingham dropped from his striker role to pick up Rodri, and the double pivot of Aurelien Tchouameni and Silva took the two number eights. Elsewhere on the pitch:

  • Silva stayed attached to Pedri.
  • Bellingham tracked Rodri through the middle.
  • Tchouameni handled Fermin, who sat a little deeper.
  • Kylian Mbappe did a light, largely symbolic job on Cubarsi and Martin.
  • Yan Diomande and Arda Guler hovered near the full-backs, ready to step in or out.
Tactical setup for Real Madrid’s defensive approach against Barcelona in El Clasico

Under that setup, Barcelona had to manufacture advantages through rotations, vertical runs and by tugging Madrid’s players into uncomfortable zones. The risk was in how far they were prepared to stretch their own shape. If too many players got ahead of the ball, a turnover would leave acres to attack. If Pedri wandered wide, the centre was exposed. If Rodri pushed on, he congested the middle and also left himself a longer chase against Bellingham when play reversed.

In the first half Barcelona never created those overloads and did not dare gamble on too much movement. They improved after the break, helped by Balde’s overlapping and Frenkie de Jong’s livelier running.

Mourinho had also spotted where Fermin would stand, in the right half-space close to Lamine Yamal. That let Tchouameni slide across to help Marc Cucurella whenever the ball went wide. Cucurella’s pace and agility, backed by Tchouameni’s power and reach, left Yamal without a favourable duel. His drives inside ran into bodies, while Cucurella could show him outside, safe in the knowledge that the inside route was covered.

None of it was groundbreaking. Still, such defensive discipline would have felt unfamiliar to Madrid supporters over the past two seasons, when even the basics on the left flank were unreliable. Diomande’s readiness to track back and keep his position meant no central midfielder had to be dragged over to patch things up. Cucurella could engage Yamal, Tchouameni could assist, and everyone else held their shape.

Built to Hit on the Break

The same structure made Madrid lethal in transition. Whenever they won the ball, Rodri found himself chasing Bellingham, a contest he cannot win. Few players anywhere match Bellingham’s athleticism on the counter, and he gave Diomande the platform to shine. A big part of Madrid’s plan this season, lacking a dependable build-up route, has been to find Bellingham between the lines so he can feed the wide players or carry the ball himself.

Real Madrid’s counterattacking shape against Barcelona in El Clasico

Madrid’s first goal came from that very scenario. Rodri was left chasing both Diomande and Mbappe into space, and he could only glance around in despair and stay with the nearest man as Diomande marched into the box.

The Mourinho Effect

This is the essence of Mourinho: identify what the opponent does worst, then take it away. Critics have long used the word “reactive” as an insult, but on Sunday it was a compliment in practice. His approach can be ruthlessly effective.

Where Barcelona Go From Here Post the El Clasico

Barcelona did create chances and, once the disappointment fades, can take heart. Few opponents own a pair of full-backs like Valverde and Cucurella, or counter-attacking speed like Diomande, Bellingham and Mbappe. Even so, Flick must unleash Plan B sooner than he did in this game.
