Squirrel Girl Finally Lands on Disney+ in X-Men ‘97 Season 3

Squirrel Girl Finally Lands on Disney+: After years of “what if?”, Marvel’s nut-loving powerhouse is officially heading to Disney+. Marvel Animation has confirmed that Squirrel Girl (Doreen Green) will debut on the platform in 2027 through X-Men ‘97 Season 3. It’s a happy ending, of sorts, for a character whose live-action show never made it to air.

How Squirrel Girl Got Here

Back in 2016, Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios began developing New Warriors, a single-camera comedy about young heroes coping with their powers. Milana Vayntrub was cast as Squirrel Girl, and Freeform gave the show a 10-episode straight-to-series order. The pilot was even shot, and reports said it tested strongly with Disney executives. But the network canceled it for lack of schedule room, and efforts to find it a new home failed.

The Show That Never Was

New Warriors star Derek Theler, who played Mr. Immortal, shared more details on Instagram in August 2026. The series was set in Cleveland, Ohio, and followed six young heroes tracked by a documentary crew, which he described as “Marvel meets The Office.” He said the cast truly believed they had something special, but production never resumed after the pilot.

Why This Debut Matters

First Disney+ original: Her earlier animated appearances were on Disney XD and Disney Jr.
A popularity boom: Marvel Rivals gave her a fresh wave of fans.
A fitting home: An animated project suits her lighthearted tone, and the source argues animation may be the best path for her.

The MCU Puzzle

Squirrel Girl is a young adult hero, putting her in the same generation as Ms. Marvel and Kate Bishop. That could make her a fit for the rumored Champions-style team-up. The tricky part is tone: she is arguably one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes, yet many treat her as a gag character. Vayntrub, now 39, has likely aged out of a live-action take, though she continues to voice the hero in games and animation.

What to Expect Next

For now, her X-Men ‘97 role appears to be a guest cameo. Whether it grows into something bigger remains to be seen.
