Magneto Finally Gets His Lightning: Doomsday Art Shows a Power Fans Have Waited Decades to See

For more than two decades, live-action Magneto has done one thing brilliantly: bend metal. But in the comics, he can do far more, and a new piece of Avengers: Doomsday promotional art suggests the movie may finally show it.

What the Art Shows for Magneto ?

According to The Direct, promotional art found by HEXFacility shows Ian McKellen’s Magneto floating, with purple electricity crackling behind him. The article is quick to say this isn’t Storm’s lightning. It’s a sign of Magneto’s electromagnetic powers.

Why This Matters?

In the comics, Magneto isn’t limited to magnetism. His power covers the whole electromagnetic spectrum, and he has used it in comics, cartoons and video games. The Direct points to X-Men ‘97, where he used it to disrupt electronics, such as inhibitor collars, and to build impenetrable force shields. In one scene, he lifted the UN into the upper atmosphere, protected by a sealed electromagnetic barrier.

Live action has come close but never quite delivered. The closest moment was X-Men: Apocalypse, where Michael Fassbender’s Magneto formed a protective bubble that even Quicksilver couldn’t get through. But as the article describes it, the bubble looked like tiny metal shards rather than electricity, with no lightning in sight.

What Other Powers Could Appear?

The article lists a few comic abilities that could fit the movie:

• Electromagnetic pulse (EMP): A simple way to disable machinery, adapted from the comics in X-Men ‘97.
• Control of iron in the blood: A darker ability from the comics that could be used to knock someone out or worse. The article admits this could be overpowered if misused.
• Powers it considers nonsense: The writer jokes that some of Magneto’s comic abilities, like astral projection and invisibility, are best left out.

None of these are confirmed for the film.

Why Marvel May Go Bigger?

The Direct argues that this is the last outing for the original X-Men cast, so Marvel is likely to go all out, including showing powers never seen in live action. It also notes that Jean Grey has already received a significant power boost by the end of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, so a stronger Magneto wouldn’t be out of place.

That’s the writer’s reasoning rather than anything Marvel has said.

What To Watch For?

• New trailers: An electric Magneto moment could appear in future footage.
• More promo art: Other characters’ powers may get new looks too.
• December 18: The film itself will settle the question.

If you want to learn more about the character, Magneto has a long comic history that explains why his powers go beyond metal.

Purple sparks around McKellen’s Magneto are a small detail with big implications. If Marvel truly lets him use his full power, it could finally give fans the version of the character they’ve read about for years. It’s still early, but it’s a promising sign.
