What the New Promo Shows?

The promo is packed with action. It opens inside Vision’s Mindspace, where Paul Bettany’s human-form Vision gets attacked by a figure at a reception desk. Soon after, James Spader’s Ultron appears in human form, and the two trade blows while Vision wears his new green, gold and red suit.

Then a fast montage cycles through Tommy Maximoff and T’Nia Miller’s Jocasta, and lands on the shot fans are talking about.

Meet the Torch

This version of Hammond is a synthetic being with dark metallic plating across his head and a small crest on his forehead. Fine seams run along his cheeks and jaw, and his eyes look dark and cold. Flames cover his whole body. A wood-paneled wall behind him suggests he exists inside Vision’s Mindspace, just like the other AI figures in the show.

Who Is Jim Hammond?

Jim Hammond is one of Marvel’s oldest heroes. Carl Burgos created him, and he debuted in 1939 when the company was still called Timely Comics. In the comics, scientist Phineas T. Horton built him as a synthetic man, but a flaw made him burst into flames whenever his skin touched oxygen. He later became a hero and fought beside Captain America and Bucky Barnes in the Invaders.

Fun fact: Stan Lee and Jack Kirby later reused the name and powers for Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four, who has no relation to Hammond.

Why He Matters to VisionQuest?

Every AI or synthetic character teased so far connects to Vision or Ultron. Hammond fits that pattern even more closely. In the comics, Ultron built the Vision from the remains of the original Human Torch, a twist from The Avengers #57 in 1968.

The show has already hinted at it. In Episode 2, JARVIS warns Vision about the danger of emotions, and the camera settles on a painting of a burning man. Vision calls him a cautionary tale about what could happen if emotions take over.

Since the series is about Vision understanding his origins, Hammond may hold the key to that story.
